This quote is attributed to several historical figures including Blaise Pascal, Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, and David Thoreau.


Regardless of who said it first, the sentiment remains the same. Less is more in almost all cases unless you are an NFL offensive coordinator and need to generate more points.


Applying this principle to business strategy is especially useful. Work on being brief, concise, and straightforward when you communicate with customers and prospective business partners.

According to research, the average attention span of a human is 8.25 seconds. That’s less than the average goldfish which clocks in at 9 seconds. Even more worrying is that attention spans are shrinking.


So, it important to spend the time up front to organize your thoughts so that you can deliver information rapidly in a compelling way. Turn your thirty-page decks into eight-page decks. Transform your brochures from four-page missives into single page impactful impressions. Keep your emails short and digestible. Consider employing impactful videos and images to tell stories.

In short (no pun intended), make your business strategy minimalist so that others can quickly understand the main points.


Ironically, it’s challenging to keep your sound bites short and word count low while still conveying quality information.


Try this one tip I learned and use consistently. Review your bullet points and sentences and ask, “So what?” If you can’t answer that question, then deep six it.
